Alvarez Leads Pirates Past Cardinals

Pedro Alvarez's first-inning grand slam was all the offense the Pirates would need as Pittsburgh defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, 7-3. Starter Jeff Karstens recorded his first win of the season.

The Pirates defeated the Cardinals at Busch Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Pedro Alvarez got things going for the Buccos with a Grand Slam in the first inning. Jeff Karstens gave Pittsburgh 7 good innings allowing just two earned runs on four hits while striking out seven. St. Louis' 10 game winner Lance Lynn only lasted 5 innings. He got shelled for six earned runs on seven hits. Carlos Beltran drove in a run with his 400th career double in the bottom of the eighth, however, the game was already far out of reach as the Pirates trumped the Cardinals, 7-3.
