The Los Angeles Angels traded slugger Kendrys Morales to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for left-handed pitcher Jason Vargas on Wednesday.
Morales became expendable after L.A. signed former MVP Josh Hamilton to a 125 million dollar contract last week. The 29-year-old first baseman and designated hitter batted .273 with 22 home runs and 73 RBIs last season in a bounce back year after missing all of 2011 due to a broken leg he suffered celebrating a grand slam at home plate in 2010. Vargas, also 29, led Seattle in wins last year, going 14-11 with a 3.85 ERA in a career best 217-and-one-third innings pitched. Both players are arbitration eligible and can become free agents after next season.
The rare trade between division rivals fills a need for both squads with Morales adding pop to a weak Mariners lineup while Vargas brings depth to a brand new rotation for the Angels. Stay with CineSport for the latest MLB news and be sure to follow us on twitter at CineSport.
