Kobe Bryant, USA Beat Spain to Win Gold

CineSport—Team USA defeated Spain 107-100 in the gold medal game at the London Olympics on Sunday. Kobe Bryant, Coach Mike Krzyzewski and Kevin Love all spoke to reporters about the win after the game.

The 2012 version of team USA dominated the field yet again in London, culminating in winning the gold medal against Spain. As far as unbeatable all-star rosters go, this one fit the bill and proved to be one of the best teams ever assembled for the Olympic tournament. But where does this team stand in comparison to the 1992 Dream Team?

With a roster full of perennial all-stars, you would be hard pressed to put together a better basketball roster for the Olympics than that of the 2012 team. Despite injuries to Dwayne Wade, Dwight Howard, Blake Griffin and Chris Bosh, they were still unbeatable in London.

The 2012 team was led by NBA MVP LeBron James’ all-around game and incredibly hot shooting from Kevin Durant and Carmelo Anthony. They got excellent point guard play from both Chris Paul and Deron Williams and Kevin Love proved to be one of the best rebounders in the tournament.

This team scored a lot of points, but they really shined on defense. At center was Tyson Chandler, the reigning defensive player of the year. Andre Iguodala is one of the best defensive swingmen in the NBA. And of course, you can’t forget about LeBron. Beyond Chandler the center position was thin, which was the team’s only major flaw. Nineteen-year-old Anthony Davis (who was taken #1 overall in the draft a few months ago) was the backup center.

While 2012’s team was filled with all-stars, the 1992 Dream Team was filled with some of the greatest basketball players of all time. Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Karl Malone and John Stockton are all on the short list of the greatest NBA players ever. Charles Barkley, David Robinson, Clyde Drexler and Patrick Ewing were on the team as well, who can also more than hold their own.

Where the 2012 team has a major hole at the center position, the 1992 team did not have any glaring issues. With Robinson and Ewing, their big men were actually a strength.

The only thing that the 2012 team has over the 1992 team is the caliber of the competition that they faced in the Olympics. The 2012 Spain, Argentina and France squads all had starters that either play in the NBA or are at the same level as NBA players. The best player on the 1992 Croatia team that the Dream Team beat in the gold medal match was Toni Kuko?.

Both Olympic basketball teams were the best of their respective times, but the 1992 Dream Team was better. Whenever you have 10 of the greatest basketball players of all time on the court together, it will be difficult to find another team that can stay competitive, yet alone beat you. The Dream Team was exactly that and they were the greatest Olympic basketball squad ever assembled.
